Devon joined ByHeart from Paidion Research, the only dedicated pediatric clinical research organization in the US, where she served as the Chief Medical Officer and was the medical monitor on numerous clinical trials. A majority of Devon’s academic career was at East Carolina University, where she built a research program for the Department of Pediatrics. Devon’s completed her medical training while serving in the US military. She earned her medical degree from the Uniformed Services University and completed her pediatric residency and neonatal fellowship training at Walter Reed.

Join Dr. Erin O'Connor, Cooper's Chief of Education, and Dr. Jeanne Donaldson, a time out researcher and professor at Louisiana State University. She knows the ins and outs of exactly how to use time outs effectively. We'll walk through exactly what to do step by step to make a time out effective (and not harmful!), from the conversation you have in the car on the way to the park, to the moment when your child pushes another kid down the slide, plus the follow-up conversation afterwards.

The way time outs are talked about online and on social media makes it sound like you're abandoning your child.  When done with intention and care, they are NOT linked to any negative impact on your relationship with your child.

Time outs are a tool that research has found to be effective, but they're just one of many tools you can use to address challenging behaviors. Take them or leave them. If you don't want to use them, there are other strategies that you can use.
